“Can you be from a place
you have never been?
You can find the island stamped all over me,
but what would the island find if I was there?
Can you claim a home that does not know you,
much less claim you as its own?”

Camino impatiently longs for the summer months when her Papi returns from working in america so they can spend the summer together. In New York, Yahaira dreads the months when her father is away.

Camino is excitedly waiting at the arrival gate in the airport when panic erupts. The plane that her Papi was travelling home on tragically crashes. In NYC, Yahaira is called to the principles office to be told her father has been in a plane accident.

These two girls are not only separated by distance but also by the secrets that their Papi kept from them. It isn’t until after his sudden death that they realise they have a half sister and that Papi split his year between the two girls.

Both girls have their own struggles in their respective neighbourhoods and hope to find comfort in each other.

This book is written beautifully in verse and explores issues like racism, homosexuality, loss of a parent and forming new relationships.

I found this book really difficult to put down as the story flowed so easily. At first the girls think they live completely opposite lives but it soon becomes clear they have similar issues that face them. The two become close, and the two families form one strong unit.

This is an emotionally raw story that I cannot recommend enough!
