when the crossroads are open to you, you must decide a path.
I will not stand still while the world makes my choices.”

It is without a doubt that Acevedo’s writing is exceptional. I haven’t read anything in verse before this book, and it was enlightening. I wouldn’t have thought that a story’s format would affect a story as much as it did in this book. The verse style of writing really underlined and highlighted the emotion and pain that was a key factor throughout the book. It brought to mind the way we deal with grief and loss and I think that it was successfully portrayed here. The overall story was pretty simple and at times I wished for more to happen (hence the four stars), however I felt that it was an important real. Not only are we faced with the grief and loss that Camino and Yahaira are subjected to, but we see their whole worlds turned upside down as they discover their father’s double life and the secrets he kept from them.
