I absolutely loved this and I can now see why people love Elizabeth Acevedo's books so much!
After reading The Poet X, I wasn't sure what to make of this author so many people love. I thought it was okay, but felt like something that had been done many times. But I still wanted to give her books another chance, and out of the remaining two, this one called my name the most (and is also a 2020 release).
Even just 100 pages in, I knew this was going to be a 4 or 5 star book for me. The writing style is so beautiful, which was something I didn't find in her debut, and I felt very connected to the characters. I didn't necessarily relate to them, but they felt like real people I could imagine.
So now I want to read With the fire on high and anything else Elizabeth Acevedo releases because this is just incredible and proves I can love her writing.
Would I recommend to a friend? /// Absolutely.
