I read this book in one day, it was such a compelling read. Elizabeth Acevedo’s use of verse to tell a story works so well, as it did in her previous novel The Poet X.

The story told is an important and hard hitting one and yet it is not bleak. It is told from dual perspectives and both characters have a strong and individual voice whilst also mirroring each other. Both characters were equally as enjoyable to read and I found myself drawn to both of their stories.

I would recommend this book to anyone as it is both an important and an enjoyable read that is easy to fly through and impossible to put down. Perhaps my only issue is that I could have read more of it as, without spoiling it, I would have liked to have seen what happened with the characters after the ending they both reached.
