Ahhhhh! I’m so sorry! I know how many people absolutely adore this book, but it really just was NOT for me at all! Initially, I was super excited for this story- an exploration of family with POC leads and a poetic rhythm— until I started reading. That’s the thing with this book! The idea is faultless, but the execution... not so much. The poetry style was boring, hard to follow. The two sisters perspectives were ridiculously similar, to the point where there were practically no distinguishing characteristics between them, so I had to rely on the characters around them to gage which setting they were in and who was who. I actually have up on this book about half way through and got it on audible to finish off, as I simply couldn’t push myself to finish it. It’s so frustrating because the idea and the plot of the book is very strong, but it’s in the execution that it has failed for me. If it was from the perspective of one person, or even if there was more differences in narrative voice, it would have been WORLDS better. Overall, very disappointing.
