This was another book which was very popular on bookstagram and the pretty cover alongside my desire to diversify my reading enticed me to add it to my Amazon Wishlist. I was then kindly gifted it by @books.with.han. I was really excited to read it but for some reason totally wasn’t expecting it to be written in verse.
I’ll tell you what it’s about and then I’ll share my experience and opinion of reading it.
Clap When You Land is a dual voice book telling the story of Camino and Yahaira. Camino lives in the Dominican Republic and lives for the summers when her Dad comes to visit from the USA where he works, she dreams of the day she can move to NYC to be with him and study medicine. Yahaira lives in NYC and is angry with her father for the secret she has unveiled.
When a plane crashes flying from NYC to the Dominican Republic, the two girls’ lives become intertwined and secrets are revealed.
I liked that you could differentiate which girls point of view you were reading by the structure; Camino is written in three line verses and Yahaira in two line. But it really did take me some getting used to. I wanted the verses to rhyme since they were written in verse and they didn’t, I’m absolutely not a learned reader of verse so I’d love it if somebody could explain the pattern and purpose as to me I just didn’t understand why. Once i got used to the pattern I really enjoyed the book and was super invested. I’m not sure if I’d read another in this style, but I’m glad I read this one.
