Elizabeth Acevedo is an author whose works I expected more from. I first read With the Fire on High by her and found that the book was lacking and embarrassing, so I was more than a little worried when picking up Clap When You Land. This feeling only increased when I discovered that it was written in verse, as it's not really my cup of tea.

You can tell the moment you start reading the book that it's going to feature an impactful and important message, yet I couldn't quite connect with it because of the format. It just felt like bad poetry to me. I didn't know the pace I should be reading at, and some of the words felt out of place and so reading it felt slightly uncomfortable.

I also struggled to keep the characters from mixing up in my head. I felt like there wasn't enough distinction between them, so I was constantly confusing them with each other and it made for a jumbled read. Not what I was expecting, and quite a big let down.
