I absolutely loved this book. Acevedo tells a family story of two very different cultures, bound by grief and loss. Camino Rios, a young teen living in the Dominican Republic, is devastated by the death of her father in a plane crash. Her father is an economic migrant and lives and works in New York, returning home for the summer each year. Camino is very close to her father and lives for his return. Caminos father has been living a secret life in New York where he has a second family. The story is narrated from two points of view: Camino and Yahaira, who is Caminos half sister. The two sisters must now not only deal separately with the loss of their father but also with the complexity of their new relationship.

The author has used a really unique "open" narrative style in the novel, which some readers may not like. However, I really enjoyed it. I think this novel will really appeal to YA readers but also a perfect crossover book for adult readers. The cover is also sensational!
