I wanted to read this book as soon as I read the blurb. As the author is a private detective himself, I thought this would bring an authenticity to his story telling and I am pleased that these seemed to be the case. Although some parts of the story seemed implausible, overall the story was far fetched enough that the plot was actually believable.

A great use of dialogue created a fast pace from the beginning which I loved. I read the majority of the book in one day which is always a good sign of an author that can keep me gripped.

The two main female characters were well written and I loved that these 2 inspirational women were powerful, strong and leading the novel as well as the investigation. Having said this, I unfortunately struggled to connect which any of the characters. I personally need to have a character or several characters that I feel invested in. They give me someone to root for when im reading yet this novel didnt provide me with that.

Although I was gripped from the beginning and needed to know more, it was about 3/4 of the way through that I lost this desire to learn more and instead wanted the book to come to an end. This happened, and rather abruptly. I wasnt sure what to expect from the ending but I felt it happened all of a sudden and I didnt feel satisfied with this. I wasnt hit with a jaw dropping plot twist that i usually enjoy.

The main issue I had about this book was the sheer number of characters. I felt like I should have listed the characters whilst I was reading as there were just too many for me to remember and this impacted on the story for me. If the characters were reduced and those remaining were fleshed out more, I believe the book would have been a lot stronger and easier to follow.

Overall, I loved the writing style and the storyline. I am usually one to avoid crime novels as a genre however I am glad I made an exception for this book. Hoffman's writing style is easy to enjoy and creates a rhythm that meant the book was enjoyably quick to read. However, I just felt like there was something lacking that has led me to not give is more stars in this review.
