Not entirely sure what to make of it - it felt unfinished

While I liked the style of writing and the plot, I did find it a bit odd that there weren't chapters, per se; they were more like acts. This may have been one of the reasons why I occasionally struggled to keep track of the minor characters, where in a more segmented book I might have had an easier time of keeping them all straight in my head.
I loved that there were two strong female characters, especially after reading the Acknowledgements at the end where it is explained that Valencia Walker was originally intended to be male.
I do wonder why quite so much attention was paid to the characters checking there wasn't any food in their teeth - I think I've maybe done this once in recent memory, but I lost count of how many times the author wrote that his characters were doing this. It just struck me as very odd.
I feel like there should have been more to the end of the book; I got to the end, turned the page expecting more, but that was it. I have quite a few unanswered questions that should have been answered, so unless I missed several little clues, I feel like maybe the author could have written a few more pages to tie these loose ends up.
