Nellโs life hasnโt gone to plan. Sheโs single, forty-something and renting a room at a strangerโs house in London. With all her childhood friends now married and with children and surrounded by images of perfect people with their perfect lives on social media, Nell feels like a f*ck-up.
But when Nell gets a job for writing obituaries, she gets to form a lovely friendship with Cricket, an eighty-something widow. Through Cricket, it puts a perspective on Nellโs own challenges and they provide support and love to each other dealing with respective events of grief and loss, and unexpected futures.
Where has this book been all my life?! This is such a relatable and funny book that shares all the day to day fears and anxieties we all want to talk about but donโt because of what other people will think. Itโs about societal and family/friendsโ expectations as to where we should be in our lives, and when things donโt go to plan, we are made to feel like a failure (via internal and external pressures). While everyone may not be experiencing the same problems Nell has, I think weโve all dealt with some kind of curve ball in our lives that has taken us aback and forced us to revisit a potential future outlook.
This book is also about love, friendships, family - seeing all the little things in life that we take for granted but should feel grateful for. Seeing Nellโs unlikely friendship with Cricket is so beautiful and heartwarming. We can do with a Cricket in our lives to put perspective on our own life challenges. I love how this book is written like a personal journal, with snappy and short chapters set across a calendar year from Jan to Dec, so despite it being a chunkier book at 504 pages, you simply fly through reading it. Nell writes a gratitude list at the end of each chapter too which has incentivised me to do the same (see pic!) and feel grateful for the things I do have, rather than focussing on the things I donโt.
A funny, funny read but also thoughtful, compassionate, relatable and above all hopeful. If life doesnโt go to plan, everything will be ok. A perfect book to read in challenging times for us all right now.
