A multi-layered, dark psychological thriller! This book had me hooked trying to work my way through the twists and turns. There are a wealth characters in this book, who tell the story from their viewpoint: Pearl, a young quiet, intelligent child who has lived in the background it seems, her whole life.
Martha, a mysterious con-artist, who lives many ‘identities’ vicariously protecting her real self.
Geneva, a nanny, who has got caught up in a difficult situation with the family she works for. And finally, Selena, the working mother, who desperately tries to preserve the social media image of her family. Add to that characters like Hunter Ross, a cold case PI, who can’t let go of a case that got under his skin years before.
The story also tells the story from the past and the present. The plot is so tightly and intricately wrapped, that it is a while before the author leads the reader to the slow realisation of the layers of the plot.
I was reading avidly, grumpy with interruptions to my reading and thought processes. Don’t get me wrong, there were times when I wanted characters to take the obvious route, like ‘tell the police for heavens sake!’ But there was never a moment when I didn’t want to read on.
A great read!
