Selena is married to Graham and she has just found out from the Nannycam that Graham is having an affair with their Nanny, Geneva. On her way home from work her train is delayed and she gets chatting to a woman called Martha. They share confidences, Selena's about Graham and Martha about the affair she is having with her married boss.
When Geneva disappears after leaving work, things take a nasty turn and everything that Selena believed about her life seems in turmoil.
We also see the story of Pearl, which took place several years before. Pearl's mother was murdered and she was 'rescued' from a life in foster care, by am employee of her mothers. With him they travelled around the country pulling various scams.
As the book moves on the stories start to converge and the reader starts to worry for Selena.
