This book is set during the Second World War. The protagonists, Saffron Courtney and Gerhard von Meerbach, are deeply in love but become separated in 1939 in order to fight for their own countries on opposing sides. Saffron becomes a FANY and carries out dangerous missions in occupied Europe: Gerhard joins the Luftwaffe. Animosities and jealousies from their pasts also play a big part in this story although it is not necessary to have read the previous book in the series in order to follow the plot.
A lot of the story is familiar to anybody who has read similar novels about life in war torn Europe and the conditions in the concentration camps. Similarly, the conclusion to the story was utterly predictable. Nevertheless the story was well written as you would expect from any book with Wilbur Smith on the cover. I'm not sure what 'with David Churchill' refers to as he doesn't get any acknowledgement anywhere that I could find.
