This is the first book I have read by a German author although I am a big fan of Scandinavian Crime and Thriller writers.
This book is set in Berlin in 2008. The plot cleverly and slowly evolves without any confusing flashbacks to 1979 when Gabriel Naumann witnessed his parents deaths. He subsequently lost his memory of the events in 1979 and has lived a secluded life, some of it in a lunatic asylum.
Gabriel's pregnant girlfriend, an investigative journalist, has been kidnapped and he needs his brother, David's, help to rescue her.
Lots of tension and unexpected twists before a cleverly constructed climax.
This is Marc Raabe's first novel and I can fully understand why it became a German bestseller. It has been well translated into English with none of the awkward or stilted language that so often occurs after translation.
