novel based on Greek mythology, I really enjoyed this book. It helps that the main character is engaging and interesting, and you want to follow her on her quest to the Underworld. The characters have some interesting and difficult relationships, and I enjoyed the way these grew and developed through the novel.

Deida has been brought up as a Soul Severer, a special group of people, who help the dead cross over the Threshold between the mortal world and the Underworld. When Orpheus, king of the Theban Dominion, sends Severers on a mission to retrieve his wife’s soul from the Underworld, Deida believes this is a way for her to gain her freedom. You can understand her need and want to escape a life of grief and death, as well as the anger she feels as she fights against fate and destiny.

I thought the story was strong, was a good take on the Orpheus myth, and the way the different areas of the Underworld was described was evocative and dark. The different rivers all had their own properties which created some exciting sequences within in the story. The book has some fresh twists to the myth, including the meeting with Hades, which was a great part of the story, and I found it difficult to put down.

With an exciting cliff-hanger ending, and an intriguing epilogue, it’s going to be hard to wait for the ending of this duology.
