I didn't expect to like this book as much as I did. Although I struggled at first, as I do with all fantasy books, trying to figure out how to pronounce people's names! After I had settled on that, I could really get into the world building which really does come to life. Ancient Greece with it's many Gods and myths becomes a perfect background for a dark fantasy novel. Focusing on the young female soul collector Diena who, along with her fellow initiates, volunteers for a quest in the underworld to rescue a Queen. I really enjoy a fiesty female lead character in a YA fantasy and I wasn't disappointed! There's the right mix of strong independence, fragility and romance to round out the character and make Diena feel very real in an otherwise unfamiliar world. The cliffhanger at the end has made me add the sequel of Daughter of Darkness to my must read list, and has reignited my love of fantasy fiction!
