The early chapters of this book are pretty standard fare for the genre. An irascible detective, an enigmatic victim and a strangely perpetrated murder. Set in Switzerland during summer we are constantly reminded about the weather and the heat - also how the Inspector likes his espresso.

Nothing really striking about this book so far. Well, maybe the pains that the author is going to to make the Inspector seem strikingly normal rather than the usual damaged detective trope. I am sure that as we unearth what is promised by the blurb to be a dark past for the victim an equally tragic one for the Inspector will be revealed.

Not shaping up to be a bad book per se but doesn't appear to be bringing anything really new to the genre.
