Lost in translation?
Despite the promise of being an international bestseller this book didn’t quite hit the mark for me. I think some of the problem is that it’s gotten lost in translation - I always find that I struggle in the first few chapters of a translated book to get my head round the writing. I thought the detective lacked conviction and the police force lacked the familiar order that it does in the British crime writers that I’ve read. I got confused on several places and it took me a while to get my head round some of the plot. There were good things though! I like the main characters, especially the receptionist and I think the plot itself was clever, if not pulled off convincingly. I probably wouldn’t reach for the sequel but I did enjoy it.
