A story more about character romance than sci-fi

I may be being a little harsh with my 3 star rating, there is nothing glaringly wrong with the book, the plot points are good and the story moves along in a way that makes sense.

It did fall down for me in a number of areas though.
First of all, and admittedly this is more my fault than the author, this is a sequel to another book-which I haven't read. As such a lot of character background and world-politics is only mentioned briefly in passing or with what I assumed were references to the events of other books. Now that's on me entirely and I still enjoyed the action in the storyline and the plot points but I was left bemused at characters and motivations at times.

However this still could have been a 4 star book, the sci-fi elements were there, I liked the fact that it was all based around humans colonising planets and then the greed of people on Earth causing war and conflict in there desire to dominate and expand.
I found it to be a nice read that I could skim through and the slightly weird relationship between Abel and Noemi, which is basically the focus of the whole book, wasn't too awkward or forced upon the reader. Again if I'd read the earlier books this may have helped at times.

My main issue is that I couldn't really place who this is aimed at. Is it a romance novel or a sci-fi adventure? and the other characters kind of faded into the background until the lead characters needed something from them again. I felt that the writing style may be aimed at a much younger audience than presumably teen-girl target.

I don't wish to complain too much,I read it,it was an easy read and diverted me for a while whilst having moments of real sci-fi interest and then got a bit jumbled in places but I did feel as though I was just reading parts of it for the sake of it to get to the next action/sci-fi bit.

TLDR: Don't pick this up unless you've read the Author's other work, teen/girly romance in a sci-fi setting, some good bits of peril, combat and spaceship flying thrown in.

I'd like to read more about the events and history of the sci-fi world this book is set in than the character story arcs this book shows me
