Solid science fiction with a young strong female taking the central role. Noemi has already had many adventures as a fighter but my enjoyment of this novel wasn't spoiled by not having read the earlier episode; 'Defy the Worlds' works fine as a standalone story.

Exciting though Noemi's travels and escapades are, most of my interest was focused upon the mech, Abel. His understanding of himself and his capabilities is fascinating and his dawning awareness of the possibilities of increasingly human reactions and emotions is not only compelling but triggers reflection upon the very nature of humanity. Certainly Abel is much more complex and wise than the young Noemi.

Though I would have liked more detail about planetary conditions and generally more 'tech', I think this is a very good novel for young adult readers. It has plenty of action and travel, friendship and romance, heroism and world-saving.
