The characters – we’ll start with them. I found some a little two-dimensional in the first book, and maybe a little fake, though I guess now I look at it this is similar to the guard we often have when we meet new people, not to mention they were meeting people they would spend the rest of their lives with. In book 2 they have definitely become accustomed to one another, and been through certain… events… that have evidently broken down barriers.
Though there is very little change in scenery for the majority of this book (they are on their way to Mars) I did like the glimpses of their mission from earth’s point of view. Bringing another character into the foreground really brought another level of depth to the narrative and seemed to strengthen the story being told, it’s implications for more than just the participants on board the Cupido.
I thought the pace of this book was much better than the first two, though this might be down to personal opinion. I’m not that bothered about relationships in books, they add to the story and make it more realistic but I’m not the kind of person who wants to read pages and pages of it. With most of the speed-dating out-of-the-way, there was room for more adventure and action in the book, and I felt like we really learned a lot about the individuals; their underlying behaviours, priorities, and Hogwarts Houses from the events that unfold in this book.
Overall I’m giving this an Exceeds Expectations. Approximately a 4/5, maybe a 4.25, maybe a 4.5… It was good anyway, and I’m glad I enjoyed this much more than the first because I thoroughly love a good sci-fi and this one has a fantastic protagonist and a really strong storyline that I can’t wait to see unfold.
