This was my first introduction to D.S. Nathan Cody, the damaged investigator, and his colleague and ex-girlfriend Megan Webley. They make a great team as they lead the reader though the horrific abductions of young children and as the perpetrators try to justify their evil behaviour. The misery of the girls is terrifyingly described as is the emotional blackmail they are subjected to. It’s difficult to say too much without revealing the backbone of the book, but it really is chilling and will keep you enthralled and appalled. The emotional and personal debris of our two detectives lives is well explored, as they work increasingly desperately to solve the case before the children are damaged further. I’m still not sure whether it’s just luck or judgement how the case is resolved, but I would thoroughly recommend this to anyone who wants to an exciting read right to the end.
