This begins as a straight forward police procedural in relation to the abduction of Poppy from her own bedroom at home one night. The focus is initially on her parents and how they gradually lose hope in Poppy being returned to their care alive.
Things however change after a second child is abducted and the police begin to suspect that there may be a link to a previous child abduction a number of years ago. This leads DS Nathan Cody to look into this previous case and similar abductions while he struggles to cope with the aftermath of his having been tortured when on a previous case while undercover.
The story is told from the viewpoint of the abductors, the police and Poppy’s family and while it is never an easy ride in terms of the emotions and actions described it does build to a finale when Cody identifies the perpetrators only for the case to take an unseen twist that has profound consequences.
This is a dark crime thriller that you want to read to the end as you are invested in the need to see how the children survive as they are shown as just as brave and resilient as the adults around them.
