Straight from page one I was hooked ! I haven't read the first two books by this author yet , but having loved this I shall remedy that soon !
The narrative is told from different perspectives so we see the view from Detective Cody , even from the little girls locked in their room . A creepy feel at times . Who are Harriet and Malcolm ? Why have they taken these children to join their family ? What are they keeping them safe from and why ? The suspense builds and at the back of your mind you are waiting for something bad to happen .
Detective Cody is a really great addition to the fictional police force . Not too good , human and with plenty of faults , just like the rest of us . The book is full of chilling secrets to be revealed and the twist which I never saw coming left me stunned and sad when I reached the final page. One of the best crime novels I have read in years !
