The book follows the story of a little girl who goes missing, and Detective Cody who is trying to find her. It's a straight detective story, but it's a good one.

There isn't too much I can say about the plot because it would be spoiler city and you really need to know as little as possible going into this.

I believe this is the third book surrounding Detective Cody. I haven't read the others and I feel like I would have benefitted from having read the first two before this, but I still really enjoyed it. I will, however, be going back and reading the first two because I liked the character and the writing. He is serious and emotionally damaged, but then comes out with random, witty one-liners as a perfect contradiction to the dark storyline.

The mood is constantly tense. There are various character point of views given in the book, including the bad guy and several of the police officers. All of them are equally desperate and emotional in their own ways. They all have their own turmoils and there is a constant feeling of hopelessness from all sides, which somehow works very well to ramp up the tension. The cat-and-mouse detective thriller is done perfectly, and there's a feeling for most of the book that you just don't know what's going to happen.

There are lots of dark feelings bouncing around, and it actually comes off as quite creepy - full of nightmare thoughts and insanity. It makes for a gripping read and I highly recommend this for any detective, crime and thriller fans.
