You know that any of Genova's books are going to be sad. They generally deal with either long term illnesses or fatal illnesses.
The even more intriguing aspect of this book is the family background, in that the main characters are divorced, yet the ex-husband comes back home when too ill to cope.
This raises another minefield of questions and moral issues and does have you questioning - would you?
The marriage/ex-marriage issues and the grown up child in the middle are expertly and sensitively dealt with.
It is sad to read about the effect ALS has on a person and then obviously on those around them.
Genova deals with this well and she doesn't necessarily make everyone nice because there is an illness involved, but she does make everyone real.
