This is a very moving story of the unremitting progress of a debilitating and fatal illness. Lisa Genova shows us the viewpoint of the inflicted person and the carer. So far, rather like her famous novel 'Still Alice'. And, like Alice, it spares no horrifically realistic detail of increasing weakness and loss of independence.

That doesn't sound like much fun to read and really it isn't. Not fun. But this story is very well written and researched with characters who are varied and real. The developing situations continually prompt you to consider "How do people cope?", "How would I cope?", "What would I do?", "Could I be brave enough?".

The people are complex and don't always easily attract easy sympathy for their personalities, their pasts or their decisions. That makes it a much more involving, even heart-breaking, story as it's not predictable nor saccharine. Every Note Played is a challenging but rewarding read which I recommend highly.
