Was really interested in this book after reading some very positive reviews. I had not read Lisa’s previous books but had seen the movie Still Alice (which I enjoyed). This book is very much a detailed diary of the effects of Motor Neuron Disease (ALS). Richard Evans is a world renowned pianist and develops the disease and slowly we see his life alter as it takes hold. He is divorced from the other central character in the book - Karina. Richard moves back in with Karina and she has to take on the onerous task of a carer for her ex-husband. It turns out that he put his career ahead of their relationship to the extent that even his daughter Grace is estranged from him. As his health slowly declines he realises that he needs to say sorry is some way for the way he treated his wife and daughter. The book is really a take of the effects of MND and the way it closes down the body in such a cruel way. Not an easy read but gives a great insight into not only the patient but also the effect that it has on those close family members. Harrowing at times. One of the problems with the book is the undoubted medical expertise of the author but I think she overdoes this – a personal opinion. Cannot say that I enjoyed it immensely but I stayed with it.
