Whilst I mostly enjoyed this book, I found a difficult read. This is not to do with the prose, which flows well and is deftly put together, but due to the subject matter of ALS, which is very powerful, moving and upsetting. I particularly found the more medical/scientific based passages quite a challenge to get through.

Although I haven't read Genova's most famous work, Still Alice, I am familiar with the concept and am sure that those who enjoyed that book will be struck by and also love Every Note Played. It's very touching with strong characters and a high level of realism - Genova has clearly undergone extensive research and worked with a number of people with ALS, which enables her to convey the true heartbreaking nature of the disease in a striking and very human way.
