When Richard is diagnosed with ALS (Motor Neurone Disease) he returns to the family home, to ex-wife Karina. Every Note Played follows the progression of the disease, as Richard struggles to resolve his relationships with his family. It's a story of love, regrets and music, and the choices we live with.

I wasn't at all sure if this was something I'd want to read, but Genova's writing feels simple, honest and effective. She spells out the increasing decisions Richard and his family have to make, the denial and overwhelm as they fail to take on what the doctors are telling them, and the effects of his care on Karina and their daughter, Grace.

I look forward to reading her other books, and appreciate the way she manages to pack in so much information throughout the story.
