Karina was born in Poland and at the time, most girls of her age aspired to be ballerinas, but not Karina, she studied and learn to love, playing the piano. As she carried on with her studies she saw piano playing as a means to escape from the oppressive Poland it was at that time.

Her travels bring her to meet Richard who she marries and they have a daughter together but the marriage fails and she and Richard divorce, leaving her to life in the USA as a single woman.

Richard is a concert pianist with a tendency to seek the company of young and pretty ladies and Karina is quite bitter about this.

We are introduced to the two of them meeting up after Richard has been diagnosed with ALS (motor neurone disease) and unable to perform any longer. The tension between them is palpable and we learn from the book cover that despite them no longer being together, Karina is the one who will accompany him through his journey with this degenerative disease.

I am keen to learn more about how this journey goes and I've a feeling I might get to know a lot more about the characters as the book progresses.
