This was a great example of a bait-and-switch! The first few pages I thought this was the predictable tale of the young wife, older abusive boyfriend and young son witnessing the abuse, then with just one line there was a complete reversal of all my assumptions. Gripping opening, good characterisations - I would definitely read on to find out what happens next.
