The suspense in this extract had me on the edge of my seat - I didn't realise it until I was done reading, but my heart was pounding and my shoulders were tense!
I love the way that the author flips your perception of the story - you go from thinking that Callie is a long-suffering and bored housewife with an absent, emotionally abusive husband and troubled child, to realising that she is a vulnerable, scared young girl being taken advantage of. This is the sort of writing that keeps you on your toes, and has your reader coming back again and again for more.
Although the reader discovers that Callie is just a teenager, she has a mean, fighting streak which adds depth to her character, and makes me want to know more about her.
