False Witness is a gripping, stand alone crime thriller by Karin Slaughter. The story focuses on sisters Callie and Leigh. We learn of the tragic events they experienced as teenagers. The violent sexual abuse by Buddy, the father of Trevor, the young boy they are babysitting. During a particularly violent attack, whilst fearing for her life, Callie cuts Buddy's leg, slicing his femoral artery. Leigh rushes to Callie, hoping to put an end to these tragic childhood experiences once and for all. Sadly, the next twenty years are filled with guilt from their trauma resulting in drug addiction and see self sabotage. Then, Leigh, now a defence attorney, receives a personal request to represent a man accused of kidnap and violent sexual assault. The man is the adult Trevor. Karin Slaughter has written wonderful characters with brilliant, realistic dialogue who accompany the reader on a gripping, traumatic and emotional journey. The story covers some difficult and sensitive subjects including child abuse, violent rape and torture, drug addiction and complex family relationships.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, though at times some scenes were hard to read due to the.subject matter. It had me hooked from the very beginning and kept me gripped until the very last page.
