I have mixed feelings now that I have finished reading False Witness.
It is set in Atlanta, Georgia during the current Covid pandemic and deals with the long term damage caused to two teenage sisters by rape and violence inflicted on them whilst babysitting.
At times the story dragged and I wondered whether to give up on it, but I am glad that I persisted and read it to the end.
The book is full of violence, swearing and vivid details about drug addiction. The characters are all flawed and, perhaps with the exception of Leigh’s husband, Walter and Dr Jerry the vet, not ones I felt I could empathise with.
I used to be a huge fan of Karin Slaughter. I loved her Will Trent and Grant County series and would rush to buy the hard backs as soon as they were available.
I was not so interested in her stand alone books which are too violent, graphic and disturbing for my taste. Whilst I acknowledge that there is a huge market for this subject matter, it is not something I particularly want to read about in such detail.False Witness lacked the clever repartee I used to so enjoy between the main characters in her earlier books. Sorry but I won’t be rushing to read her future books.
