I've never been a huge fan of the thriller genre; given the chance I'd be more likely to pick up something fantastical to escape from the real world.

However, Slaughter's novel focussing on straight-talking lawyer Leigh and her troubled sister Callie is bang on the money, weaving a web of intrigue, surprising twists and shockingly sympathetic characters.

This book was dark, with much of the story focusing on Callie's substance addiction and the consequences. In fact, consequences are one of the main themes of the novel, being far reaching long after the actions have taken place.

Leigh is relatable while her husband Walter is likeable, with the other characters acting like satellites around their family unit.

The story is set in the era of COVID-19, adding an ultra-realistic air to the story. At times the tales leans towards the overly-melodramatic, but Slaughter's story is ultimately incredibly compelling. I'll be looking out for more of her work in the future.
