So there are some thriller writers that I was reading 10/20 years ago but wouldn’t pick up anymore because their novels all blur into one now and there’s nothing original, but Karin Slaughter is most certainly NOT one of those! I swear every novel actually just keeps getting better, and this is certainly no exception.

When Leigh and Callie were teenagers they committed a crime which they thought nobody would ever know about. Decades later, Leigh is a successful attorney whilst Callie perpetuates a cycle of addiction, when someone comes into their lives who knows exactly what they did, and wants them to pay for it…

I never like to give too much away with a thriller like this, because the joy of it is in the surprises and unexpected turns it takes - and there are a few!

Now I’ll admit I didn’t immediately find it impossible to put down - it actually took me a couple of sittings to get through the first half, but then suddenly I was hooked and finished the rest in one go because the danger and excitement was just built up so brilliantly.

I love the female characters in Slaughter’s novels - they are usually this compelling combination of damaged and strong and that’s exactly the case here. The sisters have been through some terrible things and yet they are still total badasses in their own ways. And I loved the bond between them.

This novel definitely covers some triggering and upsetting topics like child sexual abuse, rape, murder and addiction so do be warned, but if you can stomach it it’s an engrossing and clever read which will keep you up late!
