This is a beautifully illustrated book, exploring food and culture. It shows the importance of food and family. I think this will a good book to use in schools to show different cultures, as well as expanding on different types of food. It uses wonderfully descriptive language whilst talking about the food and ingredients.

The illustrations are bright and eye catching, and will keep the attention of young readers. I really loved the picture of the whole family coming together to eat Faruq's food at the end.

Faruq loves cooking with his Ajee, and wants to a chef when he grows up, but his family expect him to become a doctor, like his father, but through the help of his neighbour, he learns to cook. The story allows children to challenge gender stereotypes, as well as of defying expectations. Faruq's determination and initiative are also good to show children.

I enjoyed the relationship Faruq has with Ajee and his neighbour, Mrs Joseph.

There is a recipe at the back for Guyanese lime cookies, which I'm sure children will enjoy getting to make after reading this book.
