As a child I enjoyed watching and helping adults to cook and I knew lots of other children who did the same. So this is how I can identify with Faruq , who is the little boy in this story. Faruq spends a lot of his time watching his grandmother cooking the family meals. He decides that he wants to be a chef when he grows up, but there is family pressure on him to become a doctor like his father.
While watching his grandmother cook, he becomes fascinated by the Wiri Wiri peppers that she is using. While playing outside one day Faruq notices the Wiri Wiri pepper plant and begins to talk to it. His neighbour hears him speaking and she offers to teach him more about these peppers and about cooking in general.
One day when the family are coming for lunch, his grandmother is not well enough to do the cooking, so Faruq saves the day.
