This book is bright and colourful and has the most illustrations. The mix of images and vocabulary really helps to portray the cultural elements to story. The story also covers the gender stereotypes and expectations. Faruq wants nothing more than to learn to cook, instead the expectations are he becomes a doctor. The idea of going to an elder for help and also helping others to achieve something for someone else really works as a moral lesson in this story. I love that in the end, his true talent and abilities out shine everything else.
This book really focuses on the vocabulary and accent of the characters and I really enjoyed how this promotes conversation and exploration with young readers.
Overall I throughly enjoyed this book and so did my children. It made me smile, got us talking, made us all thinking and encouraged cultural comparison
