This book is utterly charming and a real joy to read. The front cover is wonderfully colourful and bright. The illustrations throughout are so vibrant and truly bring the story to life. The text is immersed in beautiful drawings of Faruq’s family and home.

The story follows Faruq and his love of cooking, with the help of his neighbour, Mrs Joseph, Faruq learns how to make a whole host of dishes, including the all important barley soup with wiri wiri. The book demonstrates the strong bond between Faruq and his grandmother and also about his determination to follow his passion for cooking.

It’s a heartwarming read and is great for children to immerse themselves and learn about other cultures and cooking around the world.

I particularly enjoyed the addition of a recipe for Guyanese lime cookies for children to try for themselves at home.
