A truly wonderfully illustrated book telling the story of Faruq's journey with cooking. I loved the colour in this book and the beautiful illustrations throughout. I loved that the pages were so bright and cheerful and the different emotions seen on the characters faces.
The story followed Faruq's love of food but being told that he could not cook for his career as he must follow in his dads footsteps and become a doctor. But then Faruq gets to experience the joys of cooking and even make a big family cook for his family. I love that this book challenged the standard gender expectations saying that Faruq can cook and done so in a gentle way. This book talks in a softer way about how we should not put expectations on children to become what parents want them to be.
It is a book brilliant for all ages and I find it beautiful that it discusses Guyanese food cultures and that somebody who is Guyanese may see themselves in a book. I have already been tasked to created the Guyanese lime cookies for the next dinner party we host and I can't wait to share this wonderful story.
