Firstly I thought the illustrations in this book were beautiful. They fitted the tone and culture of the story perfectly. There is plenty for little eyes to take in when you read them the story.

Although I thought the story was OK I did feel the story wasn't particularly modern yet the family were quick to change their mind about his future. Faruq dreams of being a chef but his family have decided he will be a doctor like his family. Faruq is told to stay away from the wiri wiri plant in the back garden. His elderly next door neighbour tells him the wiri wiri fruit is spicy. Faruq ends up sneaking through a gap in the fence and the elderly neighbour teaches Faruq how to cook. Faruq's Granny is ill and unable to cook one day so Faruq surprises the whole family by preparing a feast for them and everyone realises he should be allowed to become a chef.
