I really enjoyed this book - I liked the subject matter, drawings and the characters.
Faruq is so interested in learning to cook but unfortunately his family have other ideas for his future.
The book touches on gender expectations and cultural expectations so it’s a good read for discussion with young people.
I particularly liked the dialect that comes across in the dialogue and felt very warmly towards all of the characters.
The food that is described and written about all sounds so delicious so to actually have one recipe for the reader to follow and try was a really delightful addition to the book.
I would recommend this story to children aged five to eight and I can see it having its place in the classroom. It is colourful and well illustrated and insights curiosity towards other cultures and there are opportunities to discuss what the characters say and do.
