The illustrations in this book are really great, and the story is also heartwarming and fun. The spoken language is spelled out as if the person had a Caribbean accent, so when it's read aloud it works well, but I wonder if it's teaching children bad grammar and poor spelling from a reading point of view - e.g. 'dem' rather than 'them'. It's a tricky one, obviously people do speak with that accent, and there's no issue with that, but I feel that if children are learning to read, this book might leave them a little confused. The overall message of the book is good (and feels like it may be aimed towards the adult reading the book) - you can be anything you want to be, don't let your parents decide your future.
I think it's a great idea to put the recipe for Guyanese lime cookies at the end of the book, I might have to give them a go in the near future myself!
