Faruq and the Wiri Wiri is a lovely picture book that emphasizes how food can bring us closer to our family, friends and neighbours. It also has the always positive message of following our dreams. You don't have to be a doctor, you can be a cook if that is where your heart leads you
I’m a big fan of getting kids excited about cooking and this book does a really good job of making it look fun. As a bonus it teaches those who are not familiar with Guyanese culture a bit about its cuisine. Exploring other cultures through food (something we can all connect through) is a wonderful thing. The characters are all lovely and real feeling. The pictures are lively and colourful with lots to look at, and now after reading it I am very hungry! The recipe in the back for lime cookies is a really great addition and a fun activity for families to share after reading the book.
