This is a lovely colourful eye catching book that I enjoyed reading myself and would love to read to young children. It has a nice moral tale to tell - Faruq learns to cook at his neighbours house and is able to create a big meal for his family when Ajee is too poorly to cook the meal herself. Some of the narrative is in dialect which may cause a few problems for some readers and will probably result in much hilarity!
The illustrations are simplistic and colourful with lots to attract enquiring minds and develop discussion.
There is a recipe for Guyanese line pickles at the back with simple instructions for a young reader to try their hand at baking. This simple little story can develop discussions in gardening, cooking and different tastes as well as different career paths. Should Faruq become a doctor, a footballer or a chef? It is lovely to read this book about a multi generational family.
