It was love at first sight for me with this children's book as I strive to add diversity, on top of fun, to my girls' bookcases.
Gorgeousgly illustrated by Sandhya Prabhat, Faruq and the Wiri Wiri by Sophia Payne is a celebration of Caribbean food and the importance of quality time spent with family. Last but (definitely) not least, it questions gender roles in the kitchen. Of course boys can cook! I have two girls and, while I encourage them to learn cooking skills, I also don't want them to think it's their duties as women to work in the kitchen.
My eldest daughter loves this story. She constantly asks questions and makes observations about all the various characters, and lime cookies are the next recipe we're going to try to make together.
This is a book that I would certainly be happy to buy as a gift, regardless of the gender of the recipient.
