With quite a grim opening, this first impression sets out the tone of the book. At times it feels like you need to have read the first book in the series, with references to McCoy's previous case and his recent time off. But at other times it feels like you could read it as a standalone novel - I'd have to read more to decide. The descriptions of Glasgow are perfectly painted, I could envisage every location. I'm undecided as to whether I actually like McCoy yet or not. The cover is dark, and suits the storyline.
